Abstract

In recent years, and especially after the Arab uprisings in the region, Russia has played an active transnational role in the Middle East. The adoption of such a role, especially since Putin's presidency, has been focused, while it has been accompanied by ups and downs as a result of the internal and specifically regional and international developments. In the past few years, the events happened in the Middle East in the context of the Syrian issue have paved the way for Russia to play an active and effective role in the Middle East and to oppose the Western countries' activities leading by the United States in the region. This issue has been surveyed in the present study as Russia's compliance with the balance of powers. Accordingly, the present study applying the descriptive-analytical method seeks to answer the question: What are the most important factors in determining Russia's interventionist role in the Middle East region during the recent years? To reply this question, the hypothesis of the research is that: In recent years, especially during Putin's presidency, Russia's interventionist role in the Middle East under the influence of security, political and economic factors, as well as America's unilateralism, was implemented in order to revive Russia's role in the international arena. In the study, the Balance-of-Power approach is argued as the main assumption for the foreign policy of the Russian Federation in the Middle East.
