Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of salty soil on the strength of concrete within the soil substructures. This was carried out by mixing salt with different soil types and investigating their effects on some short and long term properties of concrete such as compressive strength. Sodium chloride salt (NaCl) was added in different percentages of 10, 15, 20, and 25% by dry weight of the soil. The compressive strength tests on the concrete specimens within the salty soils showed that for all the salt dosages, the strength of concrete reduced with increasing salt content in the soil media, and the long term of curing reduced the strength further, implying that the higher dosages of salt content are more detrimental to the concrete in the long term. It was also observed that the reduction in 28-day strength due to salt content was more pronounced in the 1:2:4 concrete mix than in 1:1.5:3 mix. However, treatments was done to investigate the effect of tar solution and superplasticiser on protecting. It can be notice that superplasticiser was increased the compressive strength and tensile for the concrete and protect it.
