HETEROTOPIC OSSIFICATION OF HIP IN SPINAL CORD INJURY- A CASE REPORT

Heterotopic ossification(HO) is the formation of mature lamellar bone within the extra skeletal soft tissues surrounding the paralysed joint. This can occur in conditions involving prolonged immobilization like Spinal cord injury, Traumatic brain injury, Hemiplegia, Post THRHip Arthro plasty requiring long term immobilization and Post burns. This needs to be evaluated and diagnosed as early as possible and it is important to exclude the related differential diagnosis like DVT, Cellulitis, Benign effusion, Fracture, Hematoma, Myositis Ossificans and Tumour. This case report describes a 20yr old male, a case of Traumatic Quadriplegia with C4-C7 vertebrae with C5-C6 subluxation. He reported to us 10 months post spinal cord injury and we diagnosed him to have Heterotopic Ossification and managed with medications and rehabilitation program. This case report highlights the measures taken to prevent further co-morbidities associated with HO such as restriction of range of movements and the resulting functional loss and hence the progression of Heterotopic ossification.
