Abstract
The paper presents examination of various approaches to the definition of the scientific concept of a "city", analysis city role in the process of its inhabitants’ self-identification. One of city characteristics is interaction of public space and communication, which is formed by reality and has a certain cyclical nature. City public space is created by political, social, economic reality, and determines the characteristics of communication. Subsequently, this reality itself begins to be constructed and controlled by the public and communicative space of the city. At different historical stages of development cities constantly perform the function of communication centers, elaborating and developing new forms of mass communication. Within the new cities, separate locations of public space appear where communication is concentrated. The opposite feature of the expansion of the communication impact of the modern city is the human need to hide from the constant flow of information, the active dissemination of visual communication.
