Abstract
This article analyses the role of calligraphy in decorative design of religious architectural monuments according to the ancient materials and archaeological founds. Calligraphic motifs from Koran verses used in the decoration of religous monuments of Islamic architecture are of great significance and value. It is specially noted that the first Arabic style of writing known as Kufic script was considered to be the turning point in the art of calligraphy. Islamic leader Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib who created wonderful samples in Kufic style was one of the best calligraphers of his time. Painting techniques related to calligraphy are considered to determine the synthesis of calligraphy and decorative design. Having developed in the Muslim world, Islamic architecture is studied as well as its styles and specific features. As the Islamic symbol, calligraphy also reflects the cultural values of the Muslim world. Thus the application of calligraphic art in decorative design of architecture is very important in Islamic culture and art
