Activities of Anatolii Kovalenko as Scientific Secretary of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the UkrSSR (1950 - 1954)

The aim of the research is to study scientific-organizational work of the prolific Ukrainian scientist in the sphere of mechanics, expert in the theory of elasticity and thermoelasticity, Doctor of technical sciences, professor, Honoured Man of Science andTechnology, Laureate of the State prize of the UkrSSR, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the UkrSSR Anatolii Dmytrovych Kovalenko at the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the UkrSSR, and particularly at its Scientific Secretariat. Methodology of the research. Source study methods have been used to search and analyse the documentary historical sources. The usage of problematic-chronological method of historical research allowed defining the premise, course, and results of the professional activities of A. D. Kovalenko at the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the UkrSSR. Scientific novelty. Archival documents, which note the working course of A. D. Kovalenko within the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences, have been introduced into scientific circulation. The array of documents containing information on A. D. Kovalenko’s activities as the employee at the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences has been defined and analysed. The array of earlier unreleased and unpublished documents has been analysed for the first to determine the scope of their reflection of the course and results of A. D. Kovalenko’s professional activities at the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences. Conclusions. A. D. Kovalenko took an active part in ensuring the continuing functioning of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences throughout 1945-1954 time frame. The research also analysed the time of his service on the post of the Head Scientific Secretary at the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences throughout the period of 1950-1954. A series of documents has been prepared as a result (memos, letters, addresses, petitions, reports, informational messages) concerning the important spheres of the Presidium’s activities - organisation of scientific researches and preparation of scientific staff at the Academy of Sciences of the UkrSSR overall as well as at the separate institutions and foundations of the Academy.
