Determinants of Obesity Among Adults in a Tertiary Care Hospital, Lahore

Abstract
Abstract: Obesity is the deposition of excessive fats in different parts of the body. The worldwide prevalence of obesity in adults is 1.9 billion according to World Health Organization report and still continues to increase. Objective: To nd out the determinants of obesity in adults in a tertiary care hospital of Lahore Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore. A sample of 100 obese male and female patients was selected through convenient sampling technique. Data were collected with the pretested questionnaires. SPSS version 21.0 was used for data analysis. Results: Analysis of data revealed that 100% individuals were married, 60% belonged to middle class, 34% belonged to poor status and 6% belonged to high status. 65% individuals had family history of obesity while 35% were not. Another factor was taking excessive stress, out of which 71% individuals were physically inactive and took more stress while 29% were physically active and not taking much stress. 51% individuals were taking sleep of more than six hours per day and 49% individuals were not. Apparently 41% individuals were skipping breakfast whereas 39% were not skipping breakfast. In current study 64% individuals were consuming chicken 2 times a week, 5% were consuming 3 times a week while 31% were not consuming chicken at all. Conclusions: This study concluded that obesity was particularly higher in female gender. Major factors linked with the obesity were less sleep, physical inactivity, poor dietary habits, marital status, socioeconomic status and consumption of sweets.
