Abstract

To ensure an overwhelming number of the Ukrainian population with drinking water, surface water sources of domestic and drinking water supply are used. The latter are characterized by organic pollution as a result of wastewater discharge. Due to the increased level of water contamination in surface sources of drinking water it is supplied with organic substances. As a result of its chlorination, a significant range of organochlorine compounds is formed, among which chloroform predominates. A direct correlation between the number of malignant neoplasms and the consumption of chlorinated drinking water has been established by hygienic studies. According to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the estimated risk of additional cases of cancer in a cohort of the population of 1 million is calculated. It is: in the city of Dnepr – 153, Kamenskaya – 105, Yellow Waters – 97; Nikopol – 120. The upper limit of the level of carcinogenic risk acceptable to the population according to the World Health Organization recommendations is set at 100 cases per one million of people. Its value exceeds the risk accepted for the population in all the studied cities except for the city of Yellow Waters. This confirms the effectiveness of using chlorine dioxide (ClO2) in the Zheltovodskii water pipeline near the chlorination of water to reduce the level of chloroform and the risk of oncological morbidity. In the future it is planned to study the state of oncological morbidity of the urban population of the Dnipropetrovsk region by marker nosologies depending on the consumption of chlorinated drinking water.
