Abstract
Fiber to the home (FTTH) is a new technology of multimedia applications in which the end users require huge bandwidth capacity. The capacity of the optical fiber backbone network can be expanded using wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) technology. Technology is moving toward exploiting the limits of the fiber's physical properties and more sophisticated techniques will be needed to increase the spectral efficiency and counteract the transmission impairments. This is a reason why optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) techniques should be used and applied to enhance WDM networks. Further investigation has pointed to a better solution in the form of a hybrid scheme that combines WDM and OCDMA in such a way that the beneficial aspects of each technique mitigate the shortcomings of the other. In this paper, the performance of a proposed hybrid OCDMA over WDM – PON for FTTH applications is investigated and analyzed.
