Abstract

The phenomenon of polarization mode dispersion PMD can become a limiting think about optical communication systems operating over long distances at high transmission rates . Numerous approaches are proposed to mitigate PMD effect. These approaches were designed to catch up on the consequences of first-order PMD also as high-order PMD. Most of those methods either necessitate a transmitter modification or somewhat suffer from high cost and complexity. In this paper, we propose an approach to mitigate PMD supported using of optical phase conjugation within the middle of a fiber span . The proposed approach is then applied on a ten Gb/s NRZ data stream system sent through 300 Km fiber span. The proposed system is simulated using the “Optisystem'' software package. The simulation results show that using optical phase conjugation helps reducing the nonlinear penalty, as long as PMD is fully compensated.
