Abstract

Biodiesel is nothing but alkyl ester derived from vegetable oil, animal fats and algae. The vegetable oils derived from seed crops are already widely used for cooking, to make biodiesel fuel, as a solvent for inks and paints. The vegetable oil mainly consists of free fatty acids such as statured, mono unstatured and poly unstatured. Chemists could do much more with vegetable oils if they could affordably separate on an industrial scale the various long chain fatty acids that make up the oils. In this paper introduction of various methods of separating free fatty acids is given and work done by various researchers in this field is discussed.
