Abstract
Aim: Acinetobacter baumannii is an important nosocomial pathogen which causes various multidrug resistance infection such as bacteremia for the patients staying at hospital. There has been an increase in the frequency of such as these infections and outbreaks. Identification and implementation of infection control measures can also prevent these infections and increased resistance. In our study we aimed to determine the risk factors of nosocomial bacteremia caused by A. baumannii and to determine the problems to be take care. Material and Methods: In this study this case-control study inclueded the adults patients who stayed in hospital for at least 48 hours. The case group included 23 patients who had nosocomial bacteremia caused by A. baumannii. The control group included 85 patients who had not been infected with A. baumannii. Results: Sharing the same room with three or more than three patients, central venous catheter, having had a bacterial infection except for A. baumannii over the past ten days, exposure to invasive practice, total parenteral nutrition, high of APACHE II score and hemodialysis were found as independent risk factors in multivariate analysis for A. baumannii bacteremia. Sharing the same room with three or more than three patients, central venous catheter and hemodialysis were found as independent risk factors in multivariate analysis. high of APACHE II score were determined as the risk factors in univariate analysis. Conclusion: The increas in the frequency of A. baumannii infection and the isolation of multidrug resistance A. baumannii is an important global problem which poses a threat to our country as well. As opposed to the other studies, sharing the same room with three or more than three patients, and high APACHE II score were detected as risk factors. The infections due to A. baumannii can be limited by determing the risk factors for A. baumannii infections and taking efficent infection control measures for the determined risk factors.
