Abstract
Conventional annuloplasty rings are available for adult population. However in children in whom preservation of the growth potential of the native annulus is important, biodegradable rings have been developed. The generated fibrous tissue allows for physiological growth of the native annulus. The concept of annulus remodeling by inducing fibrous tissue which both preserves growth potential in children and maintains the three dimensional dynamic motion of the mitral and tricuspid valves undoubtedly contributes to the evolving annuloplasty technology. The biodegradable ring preserves the growth potential of the native annulus and that opens new perspectives for valve repair procedures in the pediatric population. In this article, the development and importance of biodegradable rings is discussed.
