Abstract

Backroung and Objective: Fingerprints are important evidence employed to identify the victim or the perpetrator. International organizations of criminalistics, such as Interpol and Europol, have set a certain minimum number of matches, in order to conclude that two fingerprints are identical. Thus, even when the fingerprints can be developed and visualized they are “not suitable for identification” if they do not contain the sufficient number of characteristics to be compared. . Mini STR‘s are developed to be used in order to enable identification from LCN or highly degraded DNA samples. As the fingerprints belong to this category we aimed to employ the Mini STR‘s and type full profiles and thus to standardize a method that can be used by the forensic laboratories. Materials and Methods: In our study DNA was isolated from 90 fingerprints and amplification was done from 60 fingerprint samples. Also the effect of the magnetic black powder that is used fort the visualization of the latent fingerprints was evaluated. Results: The results showed that the both the isolation and the amplification were successful as the mean percenteage of the correctly amplified loci was calculated as %95. The method enables the DNA identification from unsuitable fingerprints for comparison at a high level
