Abstract
Concept water is being viewed in modern English proverbs and sayings as a constant phenomenon of the English language. There have been used such methods of study as componential and contextual analyses, generalization and linguistic material interpretation as well as introspection. The purpose of the article is to show various fields of the given phraseological units usage, their value in speech, the concept water actualization in English proverbs and sayings as well as their communicative and pragmatic functions. The phraseological units under analysis reflect the world-outlook as well as the philosophy of the language users, their mentality, they transmit successfully the generations' experience. The phraseological units with the given concept present interest from the point of view of semiotics, pragmatics and cogitology. These proverbs and sayings with the lexical unit water are widely actualized both in discourse and in fiction to facilitate the communication of the people as they cover many fields of a man's activity including both everyday life and the people's philosophy
