Abstract
The article deals with the actualization of American phraseological units which include proper names and are used in the discourse of communicants, in social and political journalism, in the mass media and fiction. The attention is paid to their specific character, their axiology and pragmatics as a universal phenomenon characteristic of all natural living languages . The research covers the units which embrace all layers and activities of people and life, both standard American and slangy phraseological units including general, special and rhyming slang. The consideration is given to some units with negative connotation and those which are used to affect the speech situations and direct the communicants in the required way. As soon as the analysed units convey some information they are considered as a semiotic phenomenon. It should be mentioned that biblical and mythological phraseological units are not taken into account because they have been researched in many other publications by different authors
