Reading Habits as Correlates of Academic Performance among College of Education Student

Abstract
Culture Reading is one of the language skills. It is a receptive and formal skill that is essential in every academic endaevour. It is central to learning and every successful learner leans on reading as the basic instrument of exploring his environment and therefore widens his mental horizon. The study investigated factors that were responsible for mass failure of students in two (2) departments of School of Education, College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, Southwest Nigeria. Research questions were drawn with formulated hypotheses. Descriptive research design of survey type was used with the samples of one hundred (100) drawn from three (3) levels of students from the two departments. The instrument was validated by specialists in Language Education and Test and Measurement. Reliability was done through Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-Efficient at 0.05 level of significance. The data was analysed using simple percentage and t-test. The results showed that students with low reading comprehension abilities and poor reading habits performed low in their academic achievements which were responsible for mass failure in internal examinations. The study recommended that students should cultivate good reading habits and pay more attention to key words based on their prior knowledge when reading.
