Technical Education as an Incubator for ‘Tailor-Made-Entrepreneurs’

Abstract

In India small-scale industries have always played a pivotal role in the development of economy since independence. But turbulence created by liberalization and globalization has created innumerable challenges as well as opportunities for these industries. Hence a growth of entrepreneurial culture is urgently required for sustenance and growth of small sector to multiply the prosperity levels of the country. For making India a vibrant economy, entrepreneurial spirit must be kindled in the youth with a revolutionary zeal and they ought to play an important role in this context. Unfortunately there is poor acceptance of entrepreneurial careers among our youth in general and engineering students in particular as unfounded myths and fears on entrepreneurship refrain them to be enterprising. To remove these inhibitions education system and especially technical education system must accept the challenge and adopt strategies like curriculum revision and development, training programmes, vocational courses, educational counseling etc. to make entrepreneurship more acceptable. These remedial measures shall imbibe the necessary inputs to prepare our engineers for an enterprising future. Some strategic measures have been suggested in this context, which will significantly improve the involvement of faculty of technical institutions for the sustainable growth of entrepreneurship in India.
