The development of the socio-political system of Canada in the early nineteenth century and its impact on the development of school education

Abstract

The article deals with some aspects in the process of a public instruction system development of Canada in the early 19th c. A brief overview of social and cultural peculiarities of the society has been given. The author discusses the conditions of schooling and school premises. Special attention is drawn to the study of teacher qualifications and main methods of instruction that have been used in Canadian schools in the early 19th c. The flow of immigrants and a rapid pace of country development contributed to the improvement of social infrastructure, school system of the country began to emerge. The purpose of the article is to investigate the state of school education in Canada in the early nineteenth century. In accordance with the goal, we were tasked with methodological research: presenting a general description of the development of the Canadian school system in the early nineteenth century; considering the condition and methodological support of schools; exploring the teaching methods specific to the study period. Recent evidence suggests that in our study we used the interaction of historical and comparative research methods. The historical research clarifies the chronology of past events, their place and time, establishment of causal relationships between certain phenomena or events; comparative study examines the systems of education of foreign countries of the world and/or comparing them with the national education system. We have studied social, cultural and economic factors that influenced the development of education system. The scientific novelty of the obtained results is that: for the first time in Ukraine the development of the school system under the direction of E. Ryerson has been characterized, in particular, the principles of implementation, compulsory subjects, and methods of teaching and assessment of students. Practical importance of further investigations includes the study of the practical implementation of Ryerson's educational ideas into educational acts of the country.
