Role of a teacher‘s assistant in inclusive class: Ukrainian and foreign experience

Abstract

The reality of teaching in the twenty first century is that schools must be prepared to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners. Teachers are responsible for the overall direction, education and management of programming, evaluating, reporting, and designing interventions for all students within the classroom. However, it should not be expected that anyone teacher will have the repertoire of skills to meet the needs of all students all of the time. Classroom/subject teachers must be prepared to work collaboratively with parents, and other professionals and support staff for example teacher‘s assistant to help students achieve success in learning. The article describes foundations of the teacher‘s assistant the role of teacher assistant in providing pedagogical support for a child with special educational needs under conditions of special education. The duties of the teacher's assistant in the context of team cooperation with the teacher are: working with individual pupils or groups of pupils on special instructional projects; providing the teacher with information about pupils that will assist the teacher in the development of appropriate learning experiences; assisting pupils in the use of available instructional resources, and assisting in the development of instructional materials; utilizing their own special skills and abilities by assisting in instructional programs in such areas as: foreign languages, arts, crafts, music and similar subjects; assisting in related instructional work as required. The role of the teacher's assistant through the prism of the duties of the teacher and the duties of the teacher's assistant is analyzed as well as the activity they perform together, taking into account such criteria as assessment, planning, observation, training, assessment, report. The position of a teacher assistant may be occupied by a person who has a pedagogical education and undergo a course retraining for work under inclusive conditions. The main tasks of the assistant teacher of special educational institution are to adapt the content and methods of teaching to the needs and abilities of the child with special educational needs and to apply during the training system corrective measures aimed at learning the material. The assistant is to help students with special educational needs to acquire the knowledge, skills and skills necessary for a full-fledged life in class, school, and society.
