Abstract
The article deals with the problem of social and psychological adaptation of elderly people to the new living conditions in domestic and foreign literature. Research has shown that the social situation of elderly people's development is linked to the entry into a new circle of roles relevant to the status of a pensioner. In this case, a person needs to master normative behavior models that correspond to these roles, as well as the ways of their implementation. Standards and requirements that are advanced to individuals who have reached a certain age vary according to the expectations of others. Thus, the success of adaptation depends on the status and role definition, which are directly proportional to the level of social identity, that is, the measure of human identification with certain cultural, national, social and age groups. An empirical study in with individuals who reached the retirement age (60-85 years) was performed. After analyzing the results of our research, it is possible to state that elderly people are not psychologically prepared to their new position and a new period of life. Such uncertainty, unpreparedness negatively affects the process of their social adaptation, social activity and self-esteem. A special role is played by the general activity of the elderly. With the cessation of work, change of life stereotype, adaptability to new conditions, life style is sharply disturbed. Also, the studies have found that the adaptability of the elderly person is closely linked with the self-acceptance. A distorted or underdeveloped perception of oneself leads to a violation of adaptation, which may be accompanied by increased conflict, violation of relationships, reduced capacity for work and deterioration of health.
