PRAGMATIC FUNCTIONS OF MODAL NEGATIVE CONSTRUCTIONS WITH REFUSAL SEMANTICS

The article focuses on analysing pragmatic aspects of modal negative constructions with refusal se- mantics in the German language on the material of literary texts. The modal verbs which are the part of modal negative constructions are established. The analysis reveals a number of pragmatic functions performed by mod- al negative constructions: mitigating refusal, emphasizing the emotional state of the addressee, demonstrating the persistence and finality of refusal
