Abstract
Formation of D. Payne's personality during his childhood and the social status of his parents, his formation of mental development in his youth. Pedagogical and methodical activity covers several books and teaching of the educator first in the homes of wealthy citizens, having received the honor and excellent recommendations as well as teaching subjects. During his teaching career at Denmark Hill, D. Payne wrote the book «Universal Instruction», then founded his schools in London, where his teaching style was taken as a basis. His pedagogical activities outside London and the opening of new schools for boys are highlighted. His activities on educating girls and promoting higher education for women in higher women's courses are analyzed. His study trips to Germany and writing scientific papers during his travels around the country are described.
