Abstract
Pavements consists of two types: rigid pavement and flexible pavement. The flexible pavements consist of four components i.e. subgrade, subbase, base and surface courses. Water Bound Macadam and Wet Mix Macadam are used in construction of road in base course layer of flexible pavement. The flexible pavement constructed with WMM provides speedy and more durable construction as compared to conventional water bound macadam. The aim of this study is to compare the engineering parameters of various fine materials used in WMM. The materials which have been studied for comparison are roorkee soil, stone dust, sand, clay and fly ash. This has been done to find out which fine material is best in WMM construction. The heavy compaction test, CBR test and permeability test were conducted on various WMM mixtures. The heavy compaction test showed that WMM with stone dust has the highest maximum dry density and WMM with flyash has the highest optimum moisture content when compared to other WMM combinations respectively. The CBR test showed that WMM with stone dust has the highest CBR value amongst other fine materials used in the study. The permeability test showed that WMM with sand has the maximum value of coefficient of permeability and WMM with clay has the mimimum value of coefficient of permeability respectively
