Abstract

In this paper we discuss the principle of harmonic stability (HS) and phenomenon dependent on the relationship between the converter and the grid. In contrast with traditional small signal stability problems, the special features of the harmonic stability problem are noted. Then linear modelling techniques and techniques for device analysis are explored for the harmonic stability of converter-based systems. The fundamental principle and phenomenon of harmonic stability were first established. It is emphasized that harmonic stability is a rise of problems of small-signal stability with the waveform distortions above and below the system's fundamental frequency. The linear models of converters and methods of device analysis are discussed. It shows that the linearized ac–dc models can be extended to the harmonic transfer function, derived mathematically from the linear time span theory of the system. Finally, potential problems are summarized with regard to simulation and study of harmonic stability in large-scale electronic power grids.
