Abstract
The article discusses and substantiates the role of intonation in the study of foreign languages (using the example of English). Intonation helps to give our words a semantic connotation. Thanks to intonation, we can convey the mood, purpose, interest, and so on. Of course, you can talk without intonation, and they will un- derstand you, but then the interlocutor will not be able to understand what mood you are addressing him with and what emotions you have at the moment. Of course, the intonation in English and Russian is different. For example, we speak our native language more restrained and less emotionally. Learning a language is not just about memorizing lexical units and grammatical rules. Of particular importance when learning a foreign lan- guage is the assimilation of its intonation
