Abstract

Numerous western literatures over ancient exercise science are available, but ancient Indian contribution in this area is ignored. Physician of Ayurveda always advocates exercises on a daily basis for high-quality health and endurance. Approach of Ayurveda regarding exercise spotlights the physical advantage, as well as on its constructive influence on mind and heart. It is useful to increase muscle power, physical activity, stability and freshness. People have been concerned in risks to health since ancient times. This interest has assembled and has also begun to include many new perspectives. Physical exercise is useful to increase muscle power, physical activity, stability and freshness. It prevents risk of various diseases like obesity, cardio-vascular diseases, and hypertension and diabetes mellitus. It also delays process of ageing. Exercise is also a treatment for various diseases for e.g. obesity. It reduces obesity by reducing extra fat in the body. It is also useful as treatment in cardio-vascular diseases to increase life expectancy. The nir-agnisweadachikista [sweating by physical exercise] is used for sweadanchikista [sweating as a treatment]. Exercise is also diagnostic aliment in cardiac diseases for e.g. stress test. So exercise is useful to diagnosis, prevent, and cure of disease. This paper talks about concept of vyaayma, its indications and contraindications, even describes effectiveness of vyaayma in different diseases according to Ayurveda.
