COMPARATIVE ANALYTICAL STUDY OF SINGLE BULB AND MULTI BULB GARLIC (Allium sativum Linn.)

Lasuna (Garlic, Allium Sativum Linn.) is one of the drugs used for the treatment of dyslipidemia, coronary artery diseases, diabetes, hypertension etc. Commonly multi bulb Garlic is used as medicines but some traditional doctors are using single bulb Garlic as medicine due to its strong therapeutically properties. Till date no any analytical research work has been carried out to find out differences between both single bulb and multi bulb Garlic. So this research work has been planned to find out differences between two verities. For this purpose physicochemical and HPTLC studies were carried out. Physio-chemical parameters of single bulb Garlic ,such as Water soluble extract(82 % w/w), Methanol soluble extracts (3.9% w/w), pH (6), Total Ash Value (3.87 %), Acid insoluble Ash (0.002 % w/w), Loss on drying(14 %) and for multi bulb Garlic, Water soluble extract(96.7 % w/w), Methanol soluble extracts (14.7 % w/w), pH (6.5), Total Ash Value (5.44 % w/w)Acid insoluble Ash (0.008 % w/w), Loss on drying(8.13 %) were carried out and compared. Physico chemical parameters of both verities of Garlic reveals that multi bulb Garlic is more water soluble and methanol soluble compared to single bulb Garlic. Traditionally more therapeutic use of single bulb Garlic may be due to its high level of volatile oil and its substances as compared to multi bulb Garlic. HPTLC study of both the verities of Garlic revealed that numbers of components are more in multi bulb Garlic and also there are some common components in both verities of Garlic.
