PRODUCTION SKILLS FOR SUCCESSFUL MATHEMATICAL MODELING

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the production skills needed by students to come up with a mathematical model successfully. Specifically, this study aimed to find the specific learning difficulties that can be detected in the different stages of modeling, the conditions and support, and the production skills students need to model a particular problem successfully. Methods: The study participants were the Grade 10 students at Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas Campus who are enrolled in selected topics in Mathematics for the school year 2018-2019. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions using the interview protocol gathered qualitative data. Also, journals using the format patterned from Strengthening Content Orientation & Pedagogical Expertise of Science and Mathematics Teachers (SCOPE SMT) of the University of Sto. Tomas was utilized. While observation guide and MM outputs were utilized to verify the participants' responses in the interview served as bases for formulating a theory for students to develop successful mathematical models. Findings: The results revealed that learning difficulties were identified in the different stages of MM. Students value and appreciate MM through developing a positive mathematical disposition, developing the identity as doers of mathematics, and creating social value. Accessibility of resources, technological knowledge and skills, and scholarly advice. The production skills needed by students to successfully produce a mathematical model are mathematical creativity, mathematical HoM, and mathematical communication. Propositions for the emerging grounded theory framework with conditions set by this present investigation were also discussed. Novelty: Hence, mathematics teaching and learning must emphasize integrating mathematical modeling in the mathematics curriculum and its significance to students' production skills development and 21stcentury lifelong learning
