Abstract
This work aimed to evaluate the composition of dog rations commercially available. The nutritional contents of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, fiber, vitamins, and minerals informed on the label by the manufacturers of thirty-two types offoodfor medium-sized dogswere evaluated. The presence of transgenic components was also observed. The foodshowed contents from 15.5% to 26.0% of protein, 1.3% to 12.0% of mineral matter, and calcium content between 1.0% to 2.5%. The fibrous substance was observed between 1.3% and 4.0% and the iron in the amount of 30 mg to 170 mg. Among the foodsampled, thirty-one had transgenic components. The wide variation observed in nutritional contents demonstrates that the choice of feed is a process that requires attention to the specific needs of the animal. Some compositions suggest less need for dietary supplements, as they had, for example, enough omega 3 and 6. These components, as well as iron and sodium, were not mentioned on some labels. This research emphasizes the importance of the complete specification of macro and micronutrients present in dogfood, in order to provide a basis for a better choice according to the health status and metabolism of the dog.
