Abstract
Background and Purpose: To investigate the working memory errors of adathoda vasica an herbal extract by using radial arm maze and to investigate the extent of anti oxidant level and lipid peroxidation in central nervous system. Materials and methods: AV plant extract 50 mg and 100 mg /kg, p.o. were tested for working memory errors under RAM and its anti oxidant levels were studied by measuring lipid peroxidation and the levels of antioxidants such as SOD and CAT. The results were compared with the vehicle-treated group. Result: Administration of AV (50 and 100 mg/kg, p.o.), showed significant reduction in mean working error as compared with control group. After treatment with AV significant decrease in lipid peroxidation and similarly significant increase in antioxidants SOD and CAT were recorded. Conclusion: AV may act as a memory enhancer in addition to its positive oxidant profile and thereby it may also be useful as a supportive adjuvant in the treatment of memory functions
