Abstract

The environmental damage that the leather business creates is having a detrimental effect. The soaking, liming, degreasing, pickling, and tanning processes account for over 70% of the BOD, COD, and total dissolved solids pollution caused by the leather processing industry. To safeguard the economy and ensure that businesses are in compliance with environmental regulations, the employment of non-chemical means of combating the pollution issue has become essential. pH, alkalinity, COD, BOD, and chlorides were measured to characterize the tannery effluent's physicochemical properties. All of the studied parameters were found to be outside of the legally allowed range for discharge from tanneries. Findings from an analysis of tannery wastewater from several tanning methods were compiled. The findings show that the tanneries' discharge to inland water and sewage does not fall below the acceptable levels for selected criteria
