Abstract

The term "Western art" refers to the historical development of visual art across Europe. Between the Paleolithic and Iron Ages, prehistoric art in Europe evolved from movable Upper Paleolithic rock alongside cave paintings and petroglyph art.[1] The Aegean civilizations of the 3rd millennium BC are frequently the starting point for documented histories of European art. However, the development of art in Europe can be traced back to the Ancient Greeks; Rome adopted and adapted this art form, then spread it throughout the rest of Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia via the Roman Empire.Over the next two millennia, the influence of art from the Classical period fluctuated, disappearing in some Medieval areas before making a comeback during the Renaissance, then experiencing a period of "decay" during the Baroque era, before making a comeback during the Neo-Classical and Post-Modern eras.[5] Prior to the 1800s, many European artists relied heavily on commissions from Christian institutions for support. Historical people, epic conflicts, mythological characters, and nonreligious topics all had a revival during this time.[6] Most works of art created in the last 200 years have made no overt or subtle allusions to any one religion or ideology. Nonetheless, political issues frequently impact artwork, whether as a reflection of patron worries or the artist's own. Throughout European art's long and complex history, numerous stylistic periods have emerged and blended with one another. Classical, Byzantine, Ancient, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neo-Classical, Contemporary, Postmodern, and Modern European are the most well-known periods in the history of painting.
