Abstract

The creation and production of a dictionary is an extremely arduous task and requires a great responsibility. There are many sub-branches of this linguistics department, also called lexicography, which deals with this kind of work. Among these, etymology and, accordingly, the design, examination and preparation of etymological dictionaries is perhaps the most difficult field of language studies. Etymology is a field where mistakes can be made. So much so that if certain rules are not followed, the possibility of making mistakes is inevitable. In particular, etymological studies is a work to be carried out with a competent staff who are specialized in their field, who know the foreign languages that the language to be prepared etymological dictionary has been in contact with from the past to the present, and who are deepened in historical linguistics. The sine qua non of etymological studies is that the phases of a word in terms of sound, form and meaning are based on a framework of consistency. The fact that the most important languages of the world have etymological dictionaries today is a matter of reputation for the nation speaking that language. It is seen that the studies at the level of articles and dictionaries about the words in Turkic dialects have been done mostly in the last hundred years. In fact, the first etymological dictionary essay on Turkic was prepared by Hermann Vambery in 1878. Since then, the work of preparing the most perfect etymological dictionary in Turkic dialects continues. While important studies have been made in the field of etymology in most Turkic dialects, such as Turkish, no comprehensive studies have been made in Turkic dialects such as Crimean Tatar and Gagauz. However, a significant number of dictionaries have been prepared in Crimean Tatar from past to present. These dictionaries are in the form of thematic and term dictionaries other than general purpose. However, this work named Ḳirim-Tatar Tiliniŋ Etimologik Luġati, prepared by Enver Kurtumer, has brought both Crimean Tatar and Crimean Tatar lexicography to another level. In our study, we will focus on this work and its author.
