Abstract

Introduction. The article explores issues of human trafficking, enslavement and sexual violence related to conflict, including in the context of mass migration of men, women and children affected by military conflict or displacement, given the existence of particular risks for them to become victims of traffickers people due to the collapse of protective political, legal, economic and social systems. The article offers an understanding of human trafficking in its many forms, the factors that contribute to its existence, the victims it affects, and those who commit the crime. The article is based on the conclusions of the latest theoretical advances formulated by criminologists to reveal the criminological thinking that the current situation with migration and Ukrainians seeking asylum has reached a crisis point in Europe, and the situation of the risk of human trafficking has become extremely critical. The links between human trafficking, conflict, international response and measures of states to prevent human trafficking and provide support and protection to those at risk of human trafficking are considered. New aspects of human trafficking in conflict are presented, drawing on the experiences of scholars and practitioners to develop and offer different perspectives, including legislation and policy. Although most of the research data analyzed deals with trafficking for sexual purposes and trafficking for the use of internally displaced persons, the article takes a more inclusive approach, highlighting what is currently known about military conflict and its economic consequences in the context of increasing the vulnerability of Ukrainians who are not immigrants. The article provides an overview of human rights violations that lead to the gross exploitation of victims of human trafficking and modern responses to this crime, presents both theoretical views and practical approaches to solving the problem of human trafficking, and contains the experience and strategies of government organizations.
