Abstract

Fashion is a movement susceptible to different ‘external effects’; it can turn over former cultural-aesthetic values and after such an overturn, it is always inclined to integrate with the industry through a rapid transition. The different components of the culture indutry such as clothing, music and publishing mostly had to oppose a rigorous resistance at the beginning, in order to preserve their original meanings and secure their continuity against the dominance of social norms. Youth is one of the most important subjects creating these differences. While bursts of resistance by the youth of 1960s had a meaning and originality, the symbolic meanings of the 1980s couldn’t go beyond being a contributing factor for the industry to help the consumer goods more classy and colourful. The same adventure is also the case for the originalities of 1980s. The Youth of Kadıköy Akmar Passage appeared as the representatives of the marginal youth culture with their interesting clothing, music and publishing practices among the various identifications (religious, cultural, gender based identifications) of that era. The Youth of Kadıköy Akmar Passage were initially kept under surveillance and were tried to be pushed out from the boundaries of the generally accepted values by the new industrial society flourishing in the pessimism and ambiguity of the 1980s. Later on, with the touch of a magic wand to the culture industry, the original practices of The Youth of Kadıköy Akmar Passage which once appeared as an ‘‘anti identity’’ against the fragmented and speechless society of the 1980s, have become widespread among every segment (ethnic, religious etc.) of the society. Such a circumstance abolished the meaning of the originalities of The Youth of Kadıköy Akmar Passage.
