Abstract
The sociology education and teachingin high schools in Turkey and the written textbooks have always had some problems. The sociology education in our country, which was sometimes interrupted, has an interesting adventure. The curriculum and the content of the books changed according to the political and social conjuncture. The political and intellectual tendency was reflected in the curriculum, in the content of the lesson and in the approach of the subjects. In this respect, the high school sociology course books and education are resources that enable us to understand the insight of and the mission ascribed to sociology from the imperial period until today. The Social Sciences High School Sociology 1 book, which was written by a commission for the social sciences high schools, which were opened in recent years and increased in numbers, bear traces of the political and intellectual tendencyof the era. Not only does the book have a set of pedagogical deficiencies, but also it is turning into a platform of a certain profession and the application of this profession that shines out profoundly. It is also remarkable that the book was written in a period during which the criticism that the state was evolving into a “police state” increased. This will vindicate and help in answering the question whether the “police force”, which is another kind of armed force, will replace the “military domination”, which is said to be decreased in recent years and which led to lots of frequent complaints in our country. According to the “Society of Discipline” denoted by Michel Foucault in his theory, the science of sociology and sociology course books should not be used as a justifying and popularizing means for certain communities or certain worldviews. And a sociologist should not be a spokesman of a certain approach other than the general society’s interests.
