YENİ ŞEHİR DİNDARLIĞININ SINIF FARKINA DAYALI MEKANSAL TEMSİLLERİ: YEŞİL VADİ KONAKLARI CAMİİ VE SİTESİ THE TOPOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF THE NEW URBAN PIETY BASED ON SOCIAL DIVERSITY: GATED COMMUNITY OF YEŞIL VADI MANSIONS AND MOSQUE

Islam in Turkey has been exposed to several interpretations and influences in different periods. While Ottoman social union used to arrange the identity of society-religion and their interactions, it abandoned identity of society-religion and it was structured as an individual identity in the Republic period in the search of developing a new identity. The notion of religion in the cities hasdistinctly increased after the efforts for democratization process and urbanisation. USA-oriented new world order after the dissolution of Soviet Union and globalisation enable the policies based on religious-ethnic identities to come out. After military coup in February 28, 1997, an interpretation of Islam that is compatible with the new conditions started to develop. Nowadays depending on some changes, urban piety has been developing. In this study, new urban piety with new social/political/economic potentialities is discussed by means of Yeşil Vadi Konakları Gated Community and Yeşil Vadi Konakları Mosque which serves this gated community located in the same area. Yeşil Vadi Konakları Mosque both on TEM motorway and in the gated community, the mosque’s architecture, its served, represented, limited congregation, and the characteristics of the gated community enable to comprehend new urban piety. The notion of new urban piety banishes the religion/Islam that is one of the fundamental components of social identity and makes it approach to the Western religion tradition. The traits of this distinct and privileged community are concretized in Yeşil Vadi Konakları Mosque and Gated Community.
