Abstract

The image of the Moon has a rich symbolic meaning in poetry. In ancient Chinese poetry, the Moon is often given many symbolic meanings. For example, “reunion,” “love,” “purity,” and of course the Moon is a symbol of time and the universe. The waxing and waning Moon symbolises the passage of time and the cycle of the universe, awakening people's awareness of the universe and history. In Russian literature, the Moon represents many different things. For example, poets often use the Moon as a symbol of love, passion and romance. The soft, gentle moonlight can indicate eternal love, regardless of distance and time. And conversely, the Moon is sometimes portrayed as a symbol of sadness and loneliness. This paper studies the image of the Moon in the lyrical poems of the Russian poet Fet and the Chinese poet Tao Yuanming. The purpose of the study was to find out similarities and differences in the interpretation of nature images in the works of these poets. The practical significance of the study lies in establishing a dialogue between Russian and Chinese poetry by taking the investigation of universal images as an example. The main method of the study is comparative analysis, which makes it possible to determine the parameters of ethnic literary identity entering the dialogue relationship. By comparing the lyrics of Fet and Tao Yuanming it was found that Russian and Chinese poetries exhibit common characteristics in revealing the relationship between man and nature. However, the lyrical poems of the Chinese poet are more philosophical. Moreover, the principle of social determinism can be traced in the interpretation of the image of the Moon.
