In this paper, the phenomenon of “authority” is analyzed in terms of meanings it includes and it creates in the social field. Authority is regarded, in the framework of the analysis in the question, as a concept which is made meaningful by human togetherness or socialness and which makes various aspects of social life understandable. The purpose is to make some sociological inferences with reference to the meanings of the concept which it has gained nowadays. In his framework, for instance, answers are sought to questions such as “Why do human beings obey?”, “What kind of reasons are there for obedience to authority?”, “Is it a precondition of a pursuit of order?”, or “How does dependence on authority determine the form and the direction of human actions?” By the aid of theoretical discussions, the paper attempts to evaluate what kind of changes the elements that legitimates authority has undergone, and what kind of an appearance has authority taken nowadays.
