Abstract

Introduction. Ecotourism aims to protect natural resources and biodiversity through the sustainable use of these resources, fostering environmental awareness among tourists and local communities to safeguard the natural and cultural heritage of ecological sites and nurture respect for it. Purpose. The article aims to explore the opportunities for the development and conservation of environmentally friendly regions to promote ecotourism. Materials and methods. The theoretical foundation of the study is based on the scientific works of domestic and foreign scholars. The research employed a systematic approach, the method of structural-logical generalization, and literature analysis. Results. The concept of ecotourism as a form of tourism focused on eco-educational recreational activities is elucidated. It has been established that the foundation of ecotourism lies in natural resources and authentic products, implying harmonious relations with nature, local communities, their culture, and traditions. It is proven that ecotourism contributes to environmental protection and conservation, economic development, and social progress of regions, enhancing the well-being of local populations. The five dimensions of the ecotourism system are summarized: natural environment, environmental education, local community involvement, ecotourism experience, and socio-economic condition. It is noted that Ukraine is characterized by a wealth and diversity of ecological and recreational resources. The features of macro-regions (Western, Northern, and Central) and their role in Ukraine's ecotourism system are examined. Modern forms of ecotourism such as eco-complexes, eco-resorts, eco-hotels, eco-trails, and glamping are described. Attention is emphasized on the need for developing special national, regional, and local programs aimed at promoting local heritage to transform ecotourism into one of the priority areas of national tourism. Discussion. The prospects for further research in this area are seen in identifying the main directions for the development of environmental education in Ukraine, aimed at fostering a conscious attitude of every citizen towards the environment.
