Response of garlic cultivars under kaymore plateau of Madhya Pradesh

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to study on response of garlic cultivars under kaymore plateau of Madhya Pradesh, during 2011-12 at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, College of Agriculture, Rewa under J. N. Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur (M.P.). The experiment was carried out on five cultivars of garlic i. e. Amleta (Local), G-282, G-323, G-41 and G-1. All the treatments were replicated four in randomized block design. The results showed significant variation in plant height, number of leaves/plant, length and breadth of leaf, neck thickness, length and diameter of bulb, weight of 100 bulbs, number of cloves/plant, length and diameter of clove, TSS, dry matter and bulb yield among the various cultivars, but number of plant/m2 showed non-significant. The highest plant height (63.88 cm), number of leaves/plant (9.45), leaf breadth (1.35 cm), neck thickness (1.57 cm), length of bulb (5.75 cm), diameter of bulb (5.95cm), weight of 100 bulbs (3.93 kg), diameter of clove (1.53 cm), and bulb yield (200.60 q/ha) were recorded in Amleta, however, the highest number of plant/m2 (66.58) and length of clove (3.35 cm) in G-41, leaf length (56.73 cm) in G-282, number of cloves/bulb (29.08), TSS (45.25 %) and dry matter (42.13 %) in G-1. Whereas, lowest number of plant/m2 (65.53), plant height (53.05 cm), leaf length (37.75 cm), neck thickness (1.48 cm), length of clove (2.85 cm), diameter of clove (1.00 cm) were noted in G-1, but the lowest number of leaves/plant (7.45) in G-323, weight of 100 bulbs (3.32 kg), leaf breadth (1.15 cm), length bulb (3.80), diameter of bulb (3.65 cm) and bulb yield (135.58 q/ha) in G-41, number of cloves/bulb (18.55 ) and dry matter (39.65 %) in G-282 and TSS (40.08 %) in Amleta. The results revealed that the garlic cultivar Amleta was significantly superior for yield of bulbs (200.60 q/ha) as compared to all other cultivars. The next superior cultivar was G-323 (189.00 q/ha), followed by G-282 (178.25 q/ha).
