Abstract
This article analyzes the meaning of the word ʽworld' in the novelA Treatise on Shelling Beans by Polish writer Wiesław Myśliwski. The article demonstrates that this word plays a key role in the novel's text, as it is highly frequent and closely relates to the ideological and thematic content of the work, which raises fundamental philosophical questions about the essence of humanity and the world itself. The etymology of the lexeme świat (world) ISSN 0027-2833. Мовознавство, 2025, № 5 73 «Неабиякий світ» твору Веслава Мисливського ... is examined, with particular attention to the novel's recurring association of the images of ʽlight' and ʽworld,' which highlights the ancient kinship between these lexemes. Drawing on lexicographic sources, the article compares the overall semantic structure of the polyseme świat (Polish) and світ (Ukrainian) in contemporary standard Polish and Ukrainian. A contextual analysis reveals that, within Myśliwski's artistic idiolect, the lexeme ʽworld' functions with a range of general meanings shared by both Polish and Ukrainian: ʽthe Earth, with everything upon it'; ʽall the people living on Earth'; and ʽthe ordered reality that surrounds a person, encompassing everything that exists objectively and is governed by particular social conditions and relations.' The article also notes meanings documented solely in Polish dictionaries, such as: ʽplaces distant from where one lives'; ʽthe immediate space and its contents'; ʽone's life, including all the people, places, institutions, and other elements of reality connected to an individual's existence'; and ʽan imaginary reality — something that creates a fictitious, ordered world around a person, encompassing everything that exists within it.' The contextual nuances of these meanings are described in detail. Furthermore, the article analyzes the metaphorical semantics and motivations behind expressions such as the world was a home; the measure of the world; saxophone — this is a world; sandbox — this is a world; the world created by memory; the world is what is told; a sentence is the measure of the world; any old world. In conclusion, the article emphasizes that, while the narrator's language in the work called a treatise is stylized as colloquial speech, its simple words encode complex philosophical meanings of the lexeme ʽworld.'
