Abstract

The process of conceptualizing the image of the Mongol-Tatars in the Ipatiev Chronicle is investigated, static socio-ethical portraits of the Mongol-Tatars («безбожнымъ Татаромъ», «ѡканьнаго Кончака», etc.) have been reconstructed, The semantics and functional-pragmatic purpose of the epithets-designations used in relation to the Tatars have been clarified. The 19th and 20th-centuries editions of the Ipatiev Chronicle of the older edition are compared. It was revealed that the indexes «I. Personal Names», «II. Geographical», «III. Subjects», compiled by A. M. Truvorov for the 1871 edition, were subsequently either unfairly ignored or used without indicating the author's name. In the Galician-Volhynian Chronicle (part of the Ipatiev Chronicle according to the list of 1425), in articles 1224–1283, generalized socio-ethical portraits of the Tatars and individualized portraits of Tatar khans and voivodes were found; the chronological timeframes of the use of epithets in portraits have been clarified. Every fifth military leader named in the chronicle received a moral assessment in the form of epithets next to the person's name, in particular Batu, Nogay, Telebuga, Konchak, Burunday.
