In the article the author describes the procedure of selecting materials for forming lexical competence in professional speaking of future metallurgists. The normative national and international documents of studying foreign languages are considered. Analyzed the topics of the course, job-related areas and situations necessary in forming lexical competence, principles and criteria of selecting lexical units
