Abstract
The article deals with the problem of translating Spanish literary euphemisms into Ukrainian. This problem is regarded from the perspective of the theory of universals, which has long been a question of interest to linguists from all over the globe. As the following article maintains, almost any euphemism may have functions of certain figure of speech (metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, ellipsis, periphrasis etc). This is equally relevant for Spanish and Ukrainian euphemisms. Consequently, a metaphorical Spanish euphemism may be translated into Ukrainian using a metaphorical equivalent; on the other hand, the Ukrainian equivalent may as well be expressed through a different figure of speech, in case of which "metaphor → metaphor" or "synecdoche → ellipsis" would be regarded as a model of translating Spanish literary euphemisms into Ukrainian. The aim of this article is to name the most and the least frequent models and to try and develop a conclusion concerning the universals in translating Spanish literary euphemisms into Ukrainian.
