Abstract

From the second half of XIXth century, and, especially, from its end, photography and stereoscopy had an important role in knowing, developing and promoting a mass visual culture. The Romanian area was connected to everything that meant progress in the field of producing and visualizing images in that period. On the one hand, this was due to the great number of Romanian emigrants that left from Transylvania, and not only, beyond the borders and even across the Atlantic in search for a better life. On the other hand, among the young Romanians who studied abroad many returned home sooner or later and shared what they saw, their new acquired knowledge, with the wish of offering them to the loved ones. This is what the presented collections of stereographs, some inherited and others acquired by collectors, attest. The Life of Christ series is found in several private Romanian collections focusing on stereoscopic image. It is also held by the following collectors: Marieta Tecşa, Remus Baciu, Ion Rechea and Alexandru Bucur. Published following 1900, well received by the wide audience, the collection did not only benefit of considerable circulations, but also of numerous editions.
