Abstract
Rapidly ageing population, which is one of the global challenges of the XXI century, creates many challenges in political, economic and social life. One of the main objectives of society is providing social adaptation and integration of the elderly and the preservation of human potential. Theoretical and practical studies show that education in later life can be an effective adaptive mechanism for further personal growth and development of society. The article defines the main directions of scientific research on the issue of education elderly in the developed countries at the socio-pedagogical stage of its development. Leading ideas and achievements of educational gerontology of this period have been analyzed; synthesis of the main results of the study on education elderly has been made; main features to the portrayal of older adult learner in the publications have been found out.
