EXPECTATIONS OF TURKISH PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS FROM TURKISH TEACHING COURSE TO FOREIGNERS AND THE STATUS OF MEETING THESE EXPECTATIONS

Abstract

Since Turkish teachers, should be trained better to teach Turkish language to foreigners, ıt is important to examining expectations Turkish prospective teachers from this course at the beginning of the semester and status of meeting their expectations. In this study, relational survey model was used in order to determine the expectations of Turkish prospective teachers studying in Ataturk University from Turkish teaching course to foreigners and the status of meeting these expectations. In this context, they were evaluated expectations regarding the skills gained from the course of Teaching Turkish to Foreigners, expectation regarding the adequacy of the course, expectations regarding the teaching method of the course, expectation regarding the subjects covered by the course, expectations from the instructor teaching the course. Research data was collected both at the beginning and end of the semester from 80 Turkish prospective teachers who taking Teaching Turkish to Foreigners course at the 5th semester. In the study, interview forms developed by the researcher were used as data collection tools. Data was collected via 7-item form given at the beginning and 5-item form given at the end of the semester. Content analysis was used to analyze the data obtained. Codes and frequencies were provided correspondingly by interpreting findings converted into tables in an illustrative manner. In addition, the study was elaborated by adding some examples of views of the students. According to the results research, it has been determined that expectations of prospective teachers taking the course of Teaching Turkish to Foreigners are generally met; however, the expectations of the prospective teachers that are not fulfilled are mostly due to the lack of time allocated for the course and practices that were supposed to be performed in the Turkish teaching center.
