Abstract
The impact of propaganda on the population is hard to measure. Sometimes it is even impossible. The few information about the real concerns of the population come from the informative notes, the reports and the bulletins elaborated by the General Inspectorate of the Gendarmerie and the General Directorate of Police. Even though many are generically called "the population's state of mind", it cannot be established with certainty what percentage of the population is represented in them. A second obstacle is the short period (1945-1948) covered by the archives of the two institutions. However, some conclusions can be drawn from the information offered by the archives. Aside from the image created through propaganda, the real concerns of the population in 1944-1945 were completely different. The war and the destructions that it had caused, the presence of the Soviet troops, the precarious daily life were the true problems of Romanians. Moreover, each historical province had to confront its own problems: the Hungarian chauvinism and the Soviet administration in Transylvania, the presence of the Jews and the closeness of the USSR in Moldavia.
